Announcement of the 2026 Hokkaido Geographical Society Autumn Meeting

Excursion (on foot): "Otaru's 'Nostalgic' Landscapes - Walking Through Literature and Film"

Date and Time: Sunday, October 4, 2026, 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM (Event will proceed even in light rain)

Meeting Time: 9:30 AM, in front of JR Otaru Station

Dismissal Time: Around 12:00 PM, in front of JR Otaru Station

Guides: Masao Kanamori (Hokkaido Sapporo Keisei High School), Tatsuo Kikuchi (Hokusho University), Go Tanihata (Hokkai Gakuen University), Takeshi Kawamura (Hokkaido University)

This excursion will explore Otaru's "nostalgic" landscapes on foot, focusing on film locations, literary settings, and places associated with Takeaki Enomoto, all popular tourist destinations. We will consider the development of Otaru as a tourist destination.

Course (tentative): Meet in front of JR Otaru Station → Ishikawa Takuboku Poetry Monument → Funamizaka Slope → Ryugu Shrine (Shrine associated with Enomoto Takeaki) → Yanagawa-dori Shopping Street → Denuki-koji Alley and the repurposed warehouses → Otaru Canal → Former JNR Temiya Line → Otaru City Museum of Literature → Irouchi-dori Avenue "The Wall Street of the North" → Miyako-dori Shopping Street → Disband in front of JR Otaru Station
